I continuously have a love-hate relationship with Instagram. I love it because it allows me to see inspiring content and I don’t like it because I get sucked in to looking at Instagram for too long (anyone else??) and I also started to play the comparison game. I would look at pictures and realize I don’t have enough clothes or the latest fashion or best vacation, the greatest camera or access to photo shoots each day. Then I took a step back and realized that I don’t necessarily need those things in my own life. I’m grateful for so much in my life and I’m especially grateful that Instagram provides an outlet to show that positivity and to share a piece of inspiration with others.
Nowadays it feels like we solely look at Instagram for traffic to blogs. It’s amazing that one social media outlet can bring so many eyes to a website or brand! What were we doing before social media?!
I’ve thought a great deal about IG lately, and I think this is a trend across the board with bloggers to also be thinking critically about this form of social media.
We are constantly evaluating if what we are doing has value and if it shows that value to the people viewing our content online.
There’s nothing quite like leaving bits of your life on the internet to be evaluated that makes us think clearly about our lives.
When I first set up my Instagram account, I was skeptical and doubtful. Did I really want others to see glimpses in to my life? I realized quickly that IG offers a way to show the curated parts of life and still provide privacy. It’s an interesting dynamic to have. Even if you aren’t a blogger, you’ve probably thought about how Social Media can affect the way you are viewed.
Here are some ways that I’ve started to look at Instagram (and really social media in general) in a positive light.
1 // There is so much positivity on the Internet
There really is!! I’ve been so encouraged and inspired by many bloggers and articles and videos I’ve come across over the years. It’s up to me though to focus on the good and not look at things negatively. There have been articles I’ve come across that truly will bring me to tears and there are blog posts that will make me get up and do good things with my day. I love posts that make an impact like that! Sometimes the simplest post can do so.
2 // Who you follow can really change your mood
When you’re constantly staring at pictures of a “perfect” life, you may be getting down on yourself without actually realizing it because your life may not actually mirror that perfect life. I started to realize that I needed to follow people who I could gain some inspiration throughout my newsfeed, and who also were real. So I started cutting down on who I was following, because truthfully, I’d so much rather pour in to others that I can truly connect with.
So with that in mind…here are a few marvelous bloggers who I absolutely love following. Their content is inspirational and real!
2 // Sally from Sweetly Sally. She began the hashtag #realfashionrealme to garner bloggers to truly be who they are.
3 // Gabby and Hannah from The Swirl Diaries. You can tell from each post that these girls are pouring so much hard work and positivity into all they do with their blog.
4 // Lysa Terkeurst offers so much optimism and encouragement for women. She is the voice of Proverbs 31 Ministries.
5 // Megan from Apron Strings and Sticky Fingers. Megan is always real and never fails to bring a smile to others!
If we aren’t already friends on Instagram, I would love to be! My hope is that my IG would provide a bit of lemonade throughout your day and inspiration to feel encouraged. If you also have a few favorite inspiring IG-ers, I would really love to hear as well!
