I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with some well-deserved time with loved ones. It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is right around the corner!
I really enjoyed Thanksgiving here. It is always such a special time of year! It was wonderful to spend time with family, and take time to shop for Christmas gifts! I love this time of year and CAN’T wait for Christmas!
While Thanksgiving brought about a great deal of yummy food and oodles of pies and leftovers, I know first hand how difficult it can be to remember to make healthy choices during this time of year. This past week I was definitely over-indulging, and my body could feel it on my first run after Thanksgiving. Oops. Definitely worth it though!
However, there are a few things you can do to help you to make healthy choices and keep your health on track all while still enjoying the feast of the holidays! I’ve discovered a few ways you can slip in healthy choices this holiday season, while still being a part of the festivities!
1// Drink lots of water
Water does so much for your body! Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning and carry around a water bottle with you the rest of the day. I love opting for water at restaurants instead of a fruity or sugary drink so I can keep pumping the fluids and cut some of the sugar I would otherwise be drinking. I have also noticed I sleep better when I have been drinking water consistently all day!
2// Portion Size and Food Selection
For holiday parties or just dinners out, I try to portion out my food. If I’m at a restaurant, I will split the meal in half and take one half home for a leftover meal later on. In a serve-yourself meal, I try to limit myself to one helping of a dish so that way I still get the tastiness of the holidays while enjoying the food. I also try to give myself less of the starchy, sugary foods such as potatoes and sweet potato casserole (because of the marshmallows), and load up on the fresh green beans and salad. This way, I’m still able to enjoy the meal just sticking with foods that are better for my body.
Instead of sitting around after dinner, go for a walk with your family members! Take some time to be outside, or schedule it in your planner to go to the gym each day. A 20 minute workout, run, or walk, can help you continue to burn calories throughout the day. I like working out in the morning so I don’t have to work out at night when it often is cold and dark. Exercise also does wonders in elevating your spirit, so why not partake?
If you do happen to be inside watching a game with family and friends during the holidays, turn each commercial break in to an opportunity for exercise! For each car commercial do ten jumping jacks. For each food commercial, jog in place the length of the commercial. There are a multitude of ways to stay active this season, all you have to do is get up and get moving!
I’m so excited for this Holiday season. I love decorating, cookie-making, and celebrating with family and friends. I’ve also loved being able to know I can still participate in all the festivities while simultaneously making healthy choices for myself.
Your Turn! What are some ways you make healthy choices during the holiday season??
