Young Adult Literature We Can All Learn From

March 22, 2017

As an upper-elementary school teacher, I’m always learning about new Young Adult Literature and Kid’s Lit books which are both profound and heartwarming. Some of the books my students read in the classroom today are the same titles that I read growing up, while others are new and address current social issues.

What I love about Young Adult Literature is that often they address social change or matters of the heart at a level many can understand. There are also many young adult lit titles which resonate so well with multi-generations. Books such as Little Women or Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh are examples of books with plots and characters we all can empathize with.

Whatever the title, there are many timeless stories that fall in the Young Adult Literature Category which are both heartwarming and reflective. In all honesty, I’ve loved reading some of these books, some for the second time around! This may sound silly, but I don’t think it would hurt to read some of these. If you’re looking for a few good books to pick up, here are some of my favorites.

1 // The One and Only Ivan

2 // Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh

3 // The Boxcar Children

4 // Where the Red Fern Grows

5 // Little House on the Prairie

6 // Maniac Magee

7 // Bud, Not Buddy

8 // The Book Thief

9 // The Fault In Our Stars

10 // Harry Potter

11 // The Giver

12 // To Kill a Mockingbird

13 // Anne of Green Gables

14 // The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

15 // Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl

16 // From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

17 // Out of My Mind

18 // The Wizard of Oz

19 // Number the Stars

20 // Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Are there any Young Adult Literature Books on your list? Or any favorites as you’ve perused this one?? I’d love to hear!
